Managing versus Leading.

Management and leadership are often spoken of hand-in-hand. These two words are often used interchangeably. They are not the same thing. There is a place for both management and leadership in business. You need good managers that can logistically handle things. And, you need good leaders that can grow people. It’s rare that you find someone that is really excellent in both aspects.

Management

Management is the process of dealing with or controlling things (or sometimes people). Personally, I think for the most part… it’s things, it’s stuff. Managers, manage things – they manage reports, reviews, logistics. Managers are tactical and logistical thinkers. They show and tell… they show others the data, the plan, etc. and tell them what should be derived from it.

You can be an effective manager. Managing the reporting and statistics and may know how to drive your people to get excellent results. Usually, a manager can drive one or two, maybe three people to achieve excellent results. Managers are generally able to get good people that will work for them. And, managers likely can produce other good managers.

Leadership

Leadership is the act of providing guidance to people. Leaders work hands-on to grow people, they are not always good at the tactical, but are better with strategic, big-picture thinking. Leaders do tell and show. Leaders tell others the plan, and then get out front first and show how to execute. They let their people derive their own opinions and results.

To develop a team and achieve results that others only dream of… you will need to become a leader. You have to develop yourself to the point that others willingly, through choice, follow you and want to emulate what you are teaching. Because when they are able to emulate some of what you are – then they are able to help to multiply results on the team. Leaders don’t get intimidated by other good leaders, they embrace them. They know that other leaders will grow people and gets results.

Short and sweet… Which one are you?
